莉斯尼尔森博士在杨百翰大学普罗沃分校获得英语教学学士学位，在华盛顿特区乔治城大学获得英语写作教育学硕士学位。

在完成犹他大学教育心理学博士学位之前，她在犹他州和弗吉尼亚州的传统和另类学校教授高中英语语言艺术课程。

在弗吉尼亚大学，纳尔逊博士教授英语教育课程和一年级写作。她还与职前教师合作。她的研究兴趣包括批判性写作教学法，文化持续素养教学法，写作教学方法，以及各种儿童和青少年文学。

The award recognizes outstanding 英语杂志 articles written by someone who is not a classroom teacher. The 英语杂志 Edwin M. Hopkins Award is named after the author of the lead article in the first issue of the 英语杂志, a former professor of rhetoric and English language at the University of Kansas, member of the first Board of Directors of NCTE, and co-author of the first NCTE constitution.
