The Secondary Education – 数学 major is designed for students who plan to teach 数学 at middle, junior or high school level or for graduate studies in the field. The degree will prepare students to become state certified to teach the subject at any secondary level and help to address shortages of secondary math educators in Utah. Graduates will not only understand the art of teaching but also have a deep content knowledge of 数学. Graduates of this program are able to accurately interpret and translate pictorial and descriptive information into mathematical statements; 定量地解决问题并清楚地传达结果; demonstrate understanding of numeric, algebraic and geometric reasoning; and, demonstrate computational skills in areas of applied mathematics.

  • Knowing about mathematics, general pedagogy, and students’ mathematical learning, including modes of instruction and assessment, ways of building students’ informal understanding, and ways to stimulate engagement and exploration;
  • Designing and implementing mathematical experiences that stimulate student’s interest and intellect;
  • Orchestrate and facilitate meaningful classroom discourse in ways that promote the exploration and growth of mathematical ideas; • Assessing students’ existing mathematical knowledge and challenging students to extend that knowledge;

First, high-quality content-based knowledge is critical to student achievement. And second, dual-credit/dual-enrollment students are more likely to persist in college and are more likely to complete a Bachelor’s degree in less time than those who did not attempt college credits in high school.

犹他谷大学 数学 Department, propose to provide a one-two year course of study for secondary-level teachers leading to a 数学研究生证书. The program is intended for 1) students who are holders of a Master’s degree in a discipline other than mathematics, and who wish to teach concurrent enrollment or college courses, and 2) students who wish to prepare for admission to graduate studies at 犹他谷大学 or another college/university, in anticipation of a Master’s Degree of Science in 数学 or 数学 Education.

The objective is to provide curricula in mathematics which will meet the present and future needs of all participants and supports evidence that shows that good teachers make a clear difference in student achievement and that the importance of teacher quality cannot be overstated. More importantly, evidence suggests that teacher quality is the “most important school factor in explaining differences in student performance (Goldhaber, 2002), even compared to the effects of changes in class size, the socio-economics characteristics of students or the level of education of parents (Clotfelter, Ladd, & L., Teacher Credentials and 学生 Achievement: longitudinal analysis with student fixed effects, 2007).

Graduate courses for this program will be available to match in-service teacher’s schedules, evenings and during summer sessions, taught by 犹他谷大学 full-time faculty. Furthermore, the program is designed to give secondary mathematics teachers breadth and depth in mathematics and statistics. We anticipate that these teachers’ enhanced content knowledge will not only help students become “college and career ready” but will have the added benefit of increased student achievement in subsequent mathematics courses at the College or University level. Admittance to UVU’s Graduate Program requires a $45 招生 fee paid to Cashiers office and the following 招生 form filled out and taken to the 招生 office.
