Recognizing an educated populace as the foundation of our democracy, we fully support the foundational principles of free speech and academic freedom. We believe we must embrace the public university as a marketplace of ideas, providing everyone the freedom of thought, inquiry, and expression. We support the rights of people from all ideological perspectives to speak, explore, and engage with one another on topics they find relevant, whether in the classroom or at a public lecture.

When speakers come to campus, we recognize individuals’ rights to express their personal views and perspectives. We do not endorse the viewpoints of any speaker or counter-speaker who opposes them, but we unequivocally endorse and seek to protect the freedom to exchange competing ideas and views.
